The Global Broadband Speed Test

The Global Broadband Speed Test

The speed at which your device sends data to the internet. The speed at which your device pulls data from the internet. Here’s a brief overview of what your speed test results mean and how they affect your internet’s performance. Compare your speeds to see how your connection stands up against millions of other test results.

Results are often lower than plan speeds due to Wi-Fi conditions and device capabilities, with the results for upload and download speeds in Mbps (megabits per second). Verizon's speed test checks how fast information travels from our servers to your device. Download speeds show how long it takes to download or receive information to your computer or device from the internet. This test measures the speed of our servers to your device. The technical solution and the background of the speed test itself are complex, but to explain it briefly, the test simulates a situation in which you download or upload data.

The further away your device to the router, the weaker your WiFi signal will be. This is to refresh the equipment’s memory and renew service connection. If none of these steps help and speeds remain consistently below your plan’s advertised rate, the problem may lie with your provider or your equipment. Understanding which factor is causing your slowdown is the first step toward fixing it, or deciding whether a faster internet plan or a different provider makes more sense. Your actual speeds are shaped by several variables, some on your end, some on your provider’s. Knowing how to interpret your speed test results makes it easier to pinpoint where a problem is occurring. A household with 4 people and 15+ connected devices will consistently underperform on a 100 Mbps plan, even if usage seems light.
